An interprofessional collaboration between Hudson Valley Community College dental hygiene and nursing students was held on February 17. The focus was on promoting higher utilization of fluoride varnish application in the primary care setting on children ages 6 months through 6 years of age.
Thirty-eight dental hygiene students participated in a training day along with 67 nursing students. Small groups of five to 10 nursing students rotated throughout the day and received one-on-one instruction from a dental hygiene student on fluoride varnish application and the management of a pediatric patient utilizing dental models and unit doses of the fluoride varnish.
This initiative hopes to promote an awareness of the role that nursing professionals can have on preventing and reducing cavities in children.
